What money management skills do entrepreneurs really need? You might think it’s all about sales, strategy, and saving. It’s true that all these things matter when it comes to money management, cash flow, and of course building wealth in your business.

But sometimes the money management skills entrepreneurs need the most aren’t directly about money management at all.

I’ve been an accountant and a wealth coach for over 15 years now. And I want to share something I see all the time with entrepreneurs, especially when they come to me wondering why they’re struggling to get ahead in their businesses, and they’re looking for real answers.

SO many times, entrepreneurs believe they just need a new strategy. Or maybe they just need to increase their sales, and everything will be OK.

But a new money strategy by itself will only take you so far. And just having “more money” alone is never enough.

So what’s really going on here?

It’s not the lack of money management skills or sales that keeps entrepreneurs stuck. It’s their mindset and energy around money.

I’ve noticed that this usually comes down to two particular mindset and energy situations, both of which I’ll get into right here.

First, one of the most common situations I see is entrepreneurs and small business owners operating from a scarcity mindset.

If you’re operating from scarcity, everything feels like “not enough.” Not enough money. Not enough clients. Not enough time. This scarcity mindset leads to undercharging, overworking, and avoiding the very investments that would help you grow.

Scarcity mindset is a common trait of the Money Management Personality that I like to call “Hustlers.”

Hustlers generally go the conservative route with money. They tend to choose “safe” or traditional careers with steady salaries and a solid 401(k). Hustlers are the money managers, the savers, the ones who can make a little money go a LONG way. If you’re a hustler, you also bring a logical voice to money.

I’ve found that my Hustler clients are technically “good “with money in a traditional sense. Hustlers have a solid handle on their cash flow. They save before they spend. They invest in the future if their income allows it. We’re talking #allthethings that responsible money makers do.

Sometimes we Hustlers desperately cling to money with both hands. We’re the kind that can make $10 last forever because we think we have to. We rarely splurge on anything luxurious. Then there’s wanting to keep tabs on the money at all times, whether we’re the main breadwinners or not.

This right here is scarcity mindset in action. But here’s the truth that Hustlers need to remember.

Wealth is built from an abundance mindset. This is the key shift to make if you’re a Hustler.

Then, there’s the other side of the coin…

Sometimes scarcity isn’t the issue. It’s feeling guilt around money. This is what often happens with the Money Personality I call the “Manifestor.”

Manifestors are the type who seem to manifest money easily (sometimes even out of nowhere). They’re the free-spirited creators that love what they do and seem to have an easy time bringing money into their businesses.

BUT, Manifestors also tend to have a hard time KEEPING the money they make.

What’s behind this? Here’s what I’ve discovered…

If you’re an Manifestor, you might feel guilt around having money. This can especially be true when you start earning more, raising your prices, or even just prioritizing yourself more financially.

This often translates into spending money as fast as you make it, because you’re secretly feeling guilty for having it in the first place. That guilt might cause you to receive money, but feel like you shouldn’t keep it. So you spend it. And before you know it, you’re stuck in a “paycheck to paycheck” cycle, never getting ahead.

But if you’re a Manifestor, here’s what you need to know…

Wealth doesn’t make you selfish. It gives you more capacity. More capacity to rest, to create, to give, and to impact others. This is what Manifestors need to remember.

Knowing where you land on the Manifestor-Hustler scale can tell you a LOT about how you really relate to money. Realizing how you relate to money is THE money management skill that entrepreneurs truly need, but that most of them don’t know about.

This is because knowing about how you TRULY relate to money is one of THE most key pieces of information you can have to create a real breakthrough in your business finances.
