4 important steps to starting a new business

So you’ve decided to start a new business. Congrats! But what is starting a new business really entail? This is what we’re talking about today!

There is nothing else like running your own business. You’ll be forever changed. Because they say that starting a business is the greatest self-development adventure in the world…and I have found that to be 100% correct.

Now, the best thing to do is to just get started, and that begins with determining where you are right now.

So where are you now in the stages of starting a business?

First of all, you have to know what you want to DO in your business. Who do you help, and what do you do for them? Maybe you’re ready to go all-in with something new, maybe you want to do what you’ve been doing as a career, but for yourself instead of a boss.

I’ve always said that there are just 3 things you need to start a business, knowing what you do and who you help being THE most important one. Let’s assume that you’ve already gotten to that point, or at least have a basic idea of what your business is going to be all about.

So now that you’ve got a general idea about the business you want to start, the question is…NOW what?

If you’ve got a great idea for your business but have NO clue what to do next, you’re not alone! SO many would-be entrepreneurs get excited about a cool idea, then don’t know how to start getting it out into the world. So what happens next?

Of course. NOTHING. But let’s not let that stop YOU!

Here are 4 simple and FREE things you can do right now to start your new business!

Step 1: Get the word out on your favorite platform (personal and professional)

We live in a time where there are multiple ways to share your news, and now is the time to take advantage of them! So start with sharing your updates on your favorite social media outlets, whether that be a Facebook Post, a Instagram story, a TikTok dance–wherever you hang out the most! Get the word out there, so you can not only let people know you’re doing a new thing, but also get confident in sharing about what you do.

Pro tip: One platform for business that I definitely recommend is LinkedIn. Now is the time to update your LinkedIn profile with your new title. Then add in a short line about what you do and who you serve. Keep it short, sweet, and succinct and put yourself out there as the true professional.

Step 2: Tap into your current network

Send out a short and sweet email to your family and friends and announce your new business. Even if your friends and family aren’t necessarily your ideal clients, tell them anyway. Not only is it a nice thing to share special news with special people, but you also never know who a friend or family member could connect you with. So share your news via a personal email, and maybe include a little bit about how they can support you, too.

Step 3: Start getting beta clients

Looking to get experience and test out your new products or services? Lining up a few beta clients is a great place to start! So what is a “beta client?” They’re basically test clients that you work with either for free or at a lower rate. I recommend signing up 2-3 beta clients. Then, establish the time frame you’ll work together, set up the right metrics to track your progress, and get started.

This is a great way to get not only experience but also testimonials for your new services! Which brings me to the last point…

Step 4: Collect Testimonials

Now is the time to let people know you’re good at what you do with a little social proof! Be sure to get testimonials from any beta clients you work with (or regular clients). You can even get testimonials from prior coworkers or clients from your previous job (this is especially handy when you’re doing something brand new). So call in all the praise and rave reviews you have coming, and share them far and wide.

Pro tip: a super simple way to get some fast social proof is through a recommendation on LinkedIn, or a review on your business Facebook Page (if you have one).

So there you have it! 4 simple steps to starting your new business. Jump right in and use these steps to get the word out there about your new endeavors, and start your new business with confidence.

Now, what do you think? Which one of these ideas are you going to implement first? Leave me a comment and tell me what you’re going to do TODAY to start getting your amazing new business idea out there!

Until next time,
