How to talk about money with empowerment (and without fear)

How do you talk about money? I know that might sound like a strange question, but trust me, the words that you choose when you talk about money make a BIG difference. Not only in how you relate to your money, but also how much you make and how much you KEEP.
Noticing your language around money is especially important when things aren’t going your way is huge, too. That’s because these are the moments that it’s all too easy to use the B-word…
And this time I don’t mean “budget!”
It’s word that is SO easy to say when the money just isn’t flowing. That word is “BROKE.“
So tell me, when you find yourself in a cash flow slump in your business, or maybe overextended on credit cards or investments, do you find yourself saying that you’re “broke?”
We all talk about money this way at some point. But why does it matter if you’re simply being honest about your situation?
Sometimes what seems like just “being honest” is actually a reflection of a belief about money.
For years I had underlying beliefs about money that were rooted in fear, lack, and scarcity mindset. So when I talked about money, saying “I’m broke” was a regular thing. And wouldn’t you know it? I stayed that way for a LONG time.
But when I began to realized that everything is energy, I realized that my WORDS had an energy, too.
I began to understand that the words I chose reflected old beliefs about money. Beliefs that were a lot deeper AND more unsupportive than I thought.
So if you ever declare yourself “broke” when the money is tight, it could mean that there are some old ideas and beliefs running the show. Maybe even beliefs that you didn’t know were even there!
When I discovered this, I chose my words around money a lot more carefully.
Last year, I bought my second house with my Fiancé. At the time we put a lot of money down. It was one of those kinds of investments that could make just about anyone feel that financial pinch..
After the deal was done, he turned to me and said, says “We’re broke now.” But then I said “No no, we’re just cash sensitive.”
He laughed and agreed he liked that assessment much better!
What was a moment of “oh shit!” turned into “hey, we chose this, got a whole house, and we’ll get it back!”
Everyone has moments where their cash isn’t flowing they way they want it do. But this is the moment to be careful that your words around money stay empowering and supportive.
But why do words matter THAT much?
Words matter because your language shapes your mindset. The words you use when you talk about money reinforce your money story. These words then guide your actions. Words can also change how others perceive you AND how you perceive yourself.
I did a test once that bears this out…
Over a period of about 3 months, I mentioned a few times in casual conversation with the same person that I was “not an expert” on a particular subject. Then after about 5 months, I heard this same sentiment come back at me from this same person, using nearly the same wording that I used against myself.
What did I learn from this?
I learned that when I told people how to perceive me, they listened. And they believed me.
Since then, I’ve always tried to choose my words more carefully around ALL things, especially money. It’s made a big difference not only how I show up in the world, but also how I see myself.
So choosing the right words around money will help you create new beliefs, take new actions, and get new results!
But what if you really are in a cash flow crunch, and you really do want to be honest about your current circumstances? I’m definitely NOT telling you to deny your situation. It’s actually quite empowering to be real about what’s happening.
But you CAN see something for what it is without falling into a space of fear and scarcity. This is where choosing different words can help you make significant shifts in your energy as well as your beliefs.
What kind of words can help you do this?
If you catch yourself saying “I’m broke,” try using phrases like this instead:
- “I’m prioritizing other expenses right now.”
- “This isn’t in my budget at the moment.”
- “I’m choosing to wait before spending.”
- “I’m focusing on increasing my cash flow”
- “I’m working on [X GOAL] currently which is shifting my focus away from spending” (This could be saving for retirement, starting an emergency fund, saving for a big vacation, etc.)
- “I’d rather do XYZ” (choosing something in the range of your available budget.)
Shifts like this do two things for you. They let you honor your reality while at the same time keeping your money vibration high.
Practicing using these reframes when you need to, and pay close attention to the shift happening in your thoughts and body. You’ll likely be amazed at how different the situation looks and feels after that! It’s a simple and powerful way to nurture your relationship with money in the best possible way.
