If you’re struggling with money and want to change your financial situation but don’t know how, the cure might be simpler than you think. It might come down to recognizing then one thing you’ve been doing all this time, and without realizing how it affects your relationship with money.

What do I mean by this? Let’s talk about it right now…

In the beginning of my money journey, I was quite broke. Broke in every sense of the word, really. I was working as an accountant and thought I knew how money worked, but was still living from paycheck to paycheck.

Eventually, I decided that I wanted to be financially successful, and I set out to make that happen. One of the things I discovered along the way was a simple little thing I was doing, not even realizing I was doing it. And it was keeping me STUCK.

Basically, I was AVOIDING looking at my money. And it was costing me a LOT.

At the time, my money mindset was WAY off. I didn’t really believe that “money mindset” was a thing. My money habits were the same as they’d always been. And one of the biggest money habits I had was simply ignoring my money, especially when I knew my finances weren’t in order.

That meant I avoided looking at my bank balances. I ignored credit card statements and phone calls from creditors. I avoided it ALL. And it showed.

For the longest time I didn’t even think about it. I was just too scared and intimidated to look, so I didn’t. I didn’t know where I stood financially. The word “budget” didn’t even enter into my mind, let alone sitting down to create one!

But when I started taking Money Mindset more seriously, slowly but surely, I realized I needed to confront that fear. I needed to stop avoiding my money if I wanted to change my financial situation.

So I started making a practice of simply LOOKING at my finances. I just looked at my bank account, and allowed myself to feel what I felt. Eventually, it got easier.

I began to look at the numbers with less judgement. I started healing the shame around my debt. Soon I was even able to get on the phone with my creditors and discuss real solutions.

But it all began with stopping that avoidance. This was the practical AND magical shift I made, and it was how I began to change my financial situation for good.

Here’s why avoidance stops your financial success in its tracks…

Avoidance takes up a lot of your energy. It creates a weight on your shoulders. And whatever you don’t deal with doesn’t go away, it echoes.

That means that the thing you’re avoiding just sits there. It takes up the energy that you could be using to create a wealthy and abundant future.

BUT, moving out of avoidance is action. It’s the kind of action that shifts your energy from fear to (eventually) confidence.

But what if you look at your finances and all you feel is shame and judgement?

Let’s talk about how to go from avoidance to confidence without getting trapped in judgment. Let’s say that you open up your bank account just to look at it, and all you’re feeling is judgement and shame about how much money you don’t have.

What if you chose to just observe your thoughts rather than judge them?

Try just observing your thoughts. Take mental notes of what comes up. You can journal on what comes up too, of you like.

Now, as you observe, what do you notice? Are there particular memories or thoughts attached to certain purchases or transactions? Is there any lingering shame, resentment, or anger? Or do more positive feelings come up? Maybe a mixture of everything?

Just allow yourself to observe these feelings. Remember that you’re just looking here.

I Look At My Finances Each Day Without Fear

Also remember that it’s not about ridding your mind of any “negative” thoughts around your finances. Just like with meditation, it’s about acknowledging your thoughts, not eliminating them. It’s about not attaching to the thoughts, but recognizing them, and then letting them go.

Sometimes it takes a bit of practice, but you’ll be surprised how much easier it gets the more you practice it!

This practice is useful whether you’re struggling with your finances or not.

It’s a powerful money habit to cultivate, so you keep tabs on where you stand at all times. And without too much judgment either way. So I recommend that you use it no matter where you stand with your money!

I explain this process more thoroughly right HERE in this short video ⬇️

So today I challenge you to take this action step: simply look at your bank account, your credit card statement, or any other financial report you might have been avoiding.

Just look through the transactions, look at the balances, just take the information in. Observe the thoughts that come up, and let go of any judgment or shame that comes up as much as you can.

If you’ve been in avoidance up until now, this will help you get into the present moment. Which is, of course, the only space where you can take real action.

Practice this regularly, and watch what happens! It made a huge difference in my financial life, and I’ve watched it change the lives of my clients, too.

Can’t wait to see what it could do for you, and how it can change your financial situation to what YOU desire it to be. So put this action step to work for you, and let me know how it goes…

Until next time,

Love, light, and MONEY, Honey…
