3 Easy Ways To Take Control Of Your Spending

Do you ever feel like your spending just isn’t serving you? When you’re looking to take control of your finances, taking control of your spending is a great place to start. This means giving yourself an honest assessment of your income, your budget, and where you stand with both.
Then, from there, you can create a plan to take control of your spending. This will make a huge difference to your financial future, and for MANY reasons.
But first, have you ever wondered if your spending is “normal” compared to the average American?
Now, you might not think this is important for your goals. What does it matter how other people spend when it comes to your finances?
But there’s a reason why I bring it up. Let’s talk about that right now.
First off, check out these two reports I’ve pulled from Wallet Hub and Demand Sage about how people spend their money in 2025. You’ll likely notice that most people’s money is going toward living expenses.
That’s right, BILLS. Things like food, housing, and transportation take up almost 63% of people’s spending, per Wallet Hub. this doesn’t even include things like entertainment, miscellaneous spending, or contributions.
What amazes me the most is that there’s no mention of investment or savings. This implies that most of us are living from paycheck to paycheck.
Although honestly, I didn’t need stats to tell me that because the people in my community tell me this all the time. The paycheck to paycheck story is a common one, and sometimes it feels almost impossible to break out of it. (I lived through it myself, so believe me, I get it!)
So why do I bring this up, and what does this have to do with taking control of your personal spending? The truth is that it’s about a lot more than simply reducing your spending. It’s bigger than that.
It’s my personal mission to get everyone out of the rat race and increase CASH FLOW.
So let’s talk about what this means, and how to apply it to your life, so you can start taking control of your financial FUTURE as well as your spending. And that all starts with looking at your current budget.
Now, your personal budget situation might not be like mine or anyone else’s. But that’s OK! Simply start where you are by assessing your current budget.
I know, it’s not always the fun part, BUT believe it or not, it can be! Here I share 3 simple tips to help you create a budget, so you can have a place to start. So if you aren’t sure where you stand with your monthly budget, check this out first.
Now that you have an idea of your monthly budget (at least a ballpark will do for now!), let’s get down to the spending tips! Here are 3 super-simple tips you can use now, no matter where you are with your budget or current spending.
Start taking your spending power back with these 3 tips:
Tip #1. Start saving a percentage of your income
This might sound like a lot right now, and I get it. But even if you have to take money out every month just to cover the bills, that’s OK. Create the habit to move a percentage of your income into a savings account each month. Even if it’s 5 to 10%, that’s great! Start somewhere. Set up auto-transfers if possible. This will not only add up over time, but it will also strengthen your savings “muscle.”
Tip #2. Set aside money for FUN
Now, here’s a saving tip you’re going to like! Set aside a dedicated amount of money for things like going out to eat, grabbing a coffee, or little miscellaneous purchases. Allow yourself a little fun once in awhile, but stick to the money you set aside. And when it’s gone, it’s gone. That way you’ll ensure that you’re enjoying life while also staying on track with your savings.
Tip #3. If you have a lot of debt, take consider “liquefying your assets“
Want to start paying off your credit cards and loans, or do you simply need to increase your Cash Flow? It might be time to liquefy your assets!
Now, you might be thinking that if you had “assets,” you wouldn’t be worried about spending! But I would say that “assets” include things you might not have considered before. Things that can no longer serve you, but might serve someone else.
Or, to put it another way, sell the stuff you don’t absolutely need! Examples would be things like letting go of a vehicle you don’t use. Or bringing clothes you don’t wear anymore to a consignment shop. It could also be having a garage sale to clear out items that you don’t use anymore.
You’re only limited by your own imagination here, so get creative! Then, use the proceeds to reduce any debt that you might have. (Or, as I mentioned, this could be a Cash Flow or savings boost for you, too!)
That’s it! Assess your budget, then put these 3 tips into play to take control of your spending, and set the tone for your next steps toward the financial future of your dreams.
