How to start a new business

So you’ve decided you start a new business business. Congrats! There is nothing else like running your own business. You’ll be forever changed. (Because they say that starting a business is the greatest self-development adventure in the world…and they’re right!)

Maybe you know what you want to do in your business. Or maybe you want to start a new business with what you were doing as your job, just out on your own. So let’s suppose that you have a BASIC idea of what you do and who you serve (even if your idea is as broad as being a small service based company).

So now that you’ve got a general idea of what you want to do, the question is…

NOW what?

If you’ve got a great idea for your business but have NO clue what to do next, you’re not alone! SO many would-be entrepreneurs get excited about a cool idea, then don’t know how to start getting it out into the world.

If this sounds like you, read on!

I have compiled 4 easy, simple and FREE things you can do right away to start sharing your new thing–and more importantly, start getting clients in the door! Here are the 4 Next Best Steps for New Entrepreneurs:

  • Step 1: Update your LinkedIn profile with your new title. Then add in a short line about what you do and who you serve.
  • Step 2: Send a short and sweet email out to all your friends and family and announce your new business. Maybe tell them a little bit about how they can support you, too.
  • Step 3: Collect testimonials. Even if that means from prior co workers or clients with your previous job, ask the people who know you the best to give you a little “social proof” that you’re awesome at what you do. Because after all, there is no law against getting rave reviews if you deserve them! (Pro Tip: This is best done through recommendations on LinkedIn)
  • Step 4: Start getting beta clients. Haven’t quite worked out all the kinks in your new service and need some “real time” feedback from real people? No worries! Sign up 2-3 beta pricing clients (i.e. clients you work with for free or for a lower price). Then, set up the right metrics to track your progress. For example,  if you want to be a social media manager, note how many followings/ROI/leads/email list before and after.

So there you have it! Four simple steps to start getting YOUR new business idea out into the world. Start out here and kick off your new business idea, one step at a time!
